The Cardinality Standoff explores the disagreement between observability teams, who want high-cardinality telemetry because it allows them to diagnose problems in detail, and pipeline teams, who are focused on controlling data costs, throughput and stability. The paper argues that both teams have valid concerns, but the real issue is a lack of visibility into which data is actually being used and what it costs. High-cardinality data isn’t necessarily waste, so simply filtering or reducing data can result in valuable diagnostic information being lost.
Apto recommends five controls to manage this trade-off: setting series budgets by environment, enforcing label allow-lists, applying different rules to non-production environments, giving teams shared visibility of usage and costs, and appointing an independent owner to make decisions. The aim is to help organisations reduce unnecessary spending without compromising the telemetry that is genuinely useful during incidents. Ultimately, the paper’s message is that the cost-versus-insight trade-off is real, but it should be measured and managed deliberately rather than being decided accidentally through blanket cuts.
